English Vocabulary : Idioms and Phrases-8

 Idioms and Phrases form an integral part of an English language.Idioms and phrases refers to commonly used group of words in English language.These are most important for all the Competitive exams and will help you to score marks in the exam.

1) A far cry = A long way.
    England's 120 for 8 wickets is a far cry from the good score they wanted.

2) Gift the gab = Fluency of speech.
    A person without the gift of the gab cannot be a successful teacher.

3) Go scot-free = Escape unharmed.
    Culprits often go scot-free even after committing the most heinous crimes.

4) A dare devil = A person who does not care for any consequences.
    That daredevil is going to jump into the water from a great height.

5) Enough is enough = A limit beyond which there should be no saying or doing.
    We will not tolerate China's interference in our affairs any more.After all, enough is enough.

6)  A fish out of water = Feeling uncomfortable in unfamiliar surroundings.
     A beggar if made to sit in the company of the rich will feel like a fish out of water.

7) Fight a losing battle = Struggle without hope of success.
    England batsmen are fighting a losing match against India.

8) Fish in troubled waters = Take advantage of others' troubles.
    Politicians are callous. They always fish in troubled waters.

9) To feather one's nest = To make money unfairly.
    When he was elected treasurer of the club, it was an opportunity for him to feather his nest.

10) A feather in one's cap = A credit or achievement.
     Winning the Noble prize was yet another feather in his cap.
