English Vocabulary: Idioms and Phrases-5

Idioms and phrases form an integral part of the English language.Idioms and phrases refers to commonly used group of words in English language.These are most important for all the Competative exams and will help you to score marks in the exam.

1) Let the cat out of the bag = Accidentally reveal a secret.
    Sameera let the cat out of the bag when she revealed that they were planned a party for him.

2) Cut no ice = Have a little or no effect.
    His arguments cut no ice before the Judge.

3) Bell the cat = Face the risk.
    Every student is against the teacher but no one is prepared to bell the cat and complain about him to the Principal.

4) A cold fish = A person devoid of emotions.
   It is no use making a sentimental appeal to her because she is a cold fish.

5) Rain cats and dogs = Rain very heavily.
   She could not go out because it was raining cats and dogs.

6) Carry weight = To be significant or important.
    He is only a clerk; his idea will not carry any weight with the chairman.

7) A cat on hot bricks = To be very nervous.
   Many students feel like a cat on hot bricks before their Principal.

8) A cat and dog life = Lead a life full of quarrels.
    In this generation couples have been leading a cat and dog life ever since their marriage.

9) Curry favour = Seek or to win favour .
   Clever people know how to curry favour with their officers.

10) Cross the Rubicon = Take a decisive step.
      I have submitted my resignation; i have crossed the Rubicon, there is no going back.
