English Vocabulary : Idioms and Phrases-4

Idioms and phrases form an integral part of the English language.Idioms and phrases refers to commonly used group of words in English language.These are most important for all the Competative exams and will help you to score marks in the exam.

1) Put the cat among the pigeons = Someone who is likely to cause trouble.
    Arrogants put the cat among the pigeons in others life.

2) Bring to book = Call to amount.
    The cashier was brought to book by the officer for his neglect of duty.

3) Call a spade a spade = To be frank and truthful.
    I believe in calling a spade a spade even if the heavens fall.

4) Red rag to a bull = Something which always makes one angry.

5) Blow one's own trumpet = Praise one's own abilities and achievements.
    People who blow their own trumpets are disliked by others.

6) A bird's eye view = A general view or study.
    This paper gives a bird's eye view for the students in the examination hall.

7) Blow hot and cold = Keep changing one's opinion.
    Sameera has been blowing hot and cold about movie actors.

8) A bull in a China shop = unfit or not suitable.
     Usually he teaches physics when he was asked to teach chemistry, he proved to be a bull in china  shop.

9) Take the bull by the horns = Tackle a problem boldly.
    When the dog was chasing him he took the bull by the horns.

10) A bee in one's bonnet = To be obsessed by something.
      In studies he always has a bee in the bonnet  so he secured a top rank.
